Jesus In Exodus
Chapter 39
· Exodus 39:42, The Israelites had done all the work just as the LORD had commanded Moses. 43 Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the LORD had commanded. So Moses blessed them.
So will Jesus in a coming day. That which has been done in accord with God’s Word shall be rewarded by Him according to:
· Revelation 22:12 Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done.
That which is found in the last six chapters of Exodus followed the second descent of Moses from the mountain. What immediately followed these two descents foreshadows that which shall follow the two stages of the second coming of Jesus. Just as the first descent of Moses was succeeded by judgments on Israel, so the descent of Jesus into the air to catch up His saints will be followed by the Great Tribulation, the Time of Jacob’s Trouble.
But now look at that which occurred at the second descent of Moses. First, he appeared with a radiant face, a type of the glorified Mediator as He will come back to Israel. Second, the tablets of stone were not broken this time, but deposited and preserved in the ark. So when Jesus makes the new covenant, He says He will put His Law in their hearts. Third, the last section of Exodus opens with a reference to the Sabbath, telling us that it is in the millennium when all of this shall be made good. Then we see Israel doing all the work that God has commanded. What a picture of that day when Jesus shall reign on earth.
So in the closing chapter of the book of redemption, we see the full and perfect accomplishment of God’s purpose of grace.
· Revelation 21:3-4, And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
Moses---A Type of Jesus
The following is a partial list of how the Holy Spirit has depicted Moses as a type of Jesus.
· His nationality: Moses and Jesus were both Israelites
· His birth: Moses was born when his nation was under the domination of a hostile power. Jesus was born when the Jews were under the bondage of the Romans
· His infancy: In his infancy Moses life was endangered when Pharaoh gave orders for all newborn male children to be killed. Likewise, Herod gave orders that the newborn male children in Bethlehem be killed
· His adoption: Though Moses was the child of another, he was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. Jesus was born of a virgin mother and was the son of Another.
· His childhood: Moses childhood was spent in Egypt. An angel warned Joseph that Jesus’ life was in danger and told him to take Jesus and his mother to Egypt.
· His renunciation: Moses refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. Jesus chose to take on Himself the role of a servant and relinquish any claim to earthly riches.
· Rejected by his own people: The Israelites were angry with Moses and asked, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?” And of Jesus we read, “That He came unto His own, and His own received Him not”.
· His shepherdhood: While Moses was with his father-in-law Jethro his job was to tend the sheep. Jesus was the great shepherd of the sheep.
· His time of seclusion: Before Moses set out on his real mission in life he spent forty years of seclusion in the desert. Before He began His public ministry Jesus was hidden away in Nazareth as a despised carpenter.
· His commission from God: Moses was called by God to lead his people out of bondage in Egypt. Jesus was sent into the world to seek and to save the lost.
· His credentials: Moses’ commission from God was confirmed by power to work miracles. Jesus was empowered from on high with the power to do miracles that were a sign of His Sonship.
· His first miracle: Moses’ first two miraculous signs were to exercise power over serpents and power over leprosy. Likewise Jesus’ first miracle was power over Satan and then to cure leprosy.
· His return to his own land: When Moses was in Midian when the Lord told him to return to Egypt. In Jesus’ case an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him to take his family back to Israel.
· His announcing solemn judgments: Again and again Moses warned Pharaoh of dire consequences if he did not let the Israelites go. Jesus repeatedly warned that the people would perish if they did not repent.
· His authority was challenged: The people of Israel challenged Moses’ leadership when things did not go their way. When Jesus preached in the temple the chief priests and elders came and challenged His authority and who gave Him His authority.
· His life was threatened: On one occasion the people were ready to stone Moses because of their opposition to him. Jesus of course was opposed by the religious leaders who wanted Him killed.
· His sorrows: Moses was saddened by the ingratitude of the Israelites. Jesus also suffered the rejection of His own people.
· His forgiving spirit: Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses asking if God spoke only to Moses. When Jesus was reviled He did not return such behavior.
· His prayerfulness: Moses was a great man of prayer. Of course Jesus was portrayed constantly as a man of prayer.
· His faithfulness: Both men were faithful to their calling and their witness.
· His providing Israel with water: Moses struck the rock in the desert and provided water for the Israelites. Jesus provided living water for all who would come to Him.
· His judgeship: Moses sat as judge over his people. Jesus will sit as judge over all mankind.
· His leadership: Moses was made the leader and director of God’s people. Jesus is the leader that all Christendom looks to for guidance.
· His mediation: Moses acted as mediator between God and the sinful Israelites. Jesus is the Mediator between the sinner and God.
· His election: Moses was chosen by God. God called Jesus His elect.
· His wisdom: Moses was very learned as a result of growing up in Pharaoh’s palace. It was in Jesus that all the wisdom and knowledge were hidden.
· His intimate communion with God: Moses spent very intimate time with God on Mount Sinai and met God face to face. Jesus was constantly in intimate communion with His Father.
· His message: Moses was the mouthpiece for God. Jesus was the Incarnate Word.
· His transfiguration on the mountain: Moses underwent an amazing transformation as he came down from the mountain the second time after being with God. Jesus underwent a transfiguration on the mountain in the presence of two of His followers.
· His perfect obedience: When given instruction regarding the building of the Tabernacle, Moses did exactly as God had directed. Of Jesus it was said that He perfectly kept His Father’s commandments.
· His erecting the Tabernacle: Moses built the Tabernacle. Jesus established the “church”.
· He finished his work: Moses completed the work on the Tabernacle. Jesus finished the work God sent Him to do.
· His anointing another comforter: Moses did not leave his people without a leader and comforter (Joshua). Jesus promised His people another Comforter (The Holy Spirit),
· His death was necessary before Israel could enter Canaan. It was necessary for Jesus to die as an atonement for the sins of the world before anyone could enter into the eternal security of heaven.
· His second appearing: Moses is one of two Old Testament characters who would return to the earth in New Testament times. Jesus will return to the earth again at the close of the age.
