"1Paul"
  • 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: 2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.


  • apostle -  (apostolo) a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders   (from the verb apostello - to order (one) to go to a place appointed)


  • saint – (agio)  most holy thing (person), a saint (from agno - exciting reverence, venerable, sacred) , different and set apart to God


  • faithful – (pisto) – one who trusts in God's promises



  • peace  (eirene) - a state of national tranquility

  •  That which affords joy, pleasure, delight


  •  The sovereign favor of God for humankind — especially in regards to salvation, irrespective of actions ("deeds"), earned worth, or proven goodness.


  •  Used 148 times in NT

"Blessings From The Father"
  • Blessings From The Father
  • 3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

  • 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will  6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.


  • predestined  (proorizo) – to predetermine


  • adoption as sons  (uioqesia) adoption as sons. Used 5 times in the NT. In every case, used to imply acceptance as children of God.


  • his pleasure and will (eudokia)- kind intention, good will, benevolence


  •  praise (epaino) commendation, praise


  •  glory (doxa) – opinion, in NT always a good opinion worthy of praise

Blessings through the Son
  • 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. 11In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation….

  • 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding


  • redemption -(apolutrosi) a releasing effected by payment of ransom as opposed to agorazo – to buy as slave and keep a slave
  •  forgiveness (afesi) – pardon of sins, letting them go as if they had never been committed
  •  lavished (perisseuo) – since of overflowing
  •  understanding (fronesi) – insight, knowledge of the will of God

  • 9And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.



  •  mystery (musterion) – secret made known to the godly and kept from the ungodly
  •  purposed -(protiqemai) - to display publicly

  • (NASB) 10with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.


  •  administration (oikonomia)- the oversight of other's property


  •  fullness (pleroma) – that which has been filled


  •  times (kairo) – the decisive epoch waited for


  •  summing (anakefalaiomai) to sum up, condense

  •  first to hope (proelpizo) – pro=before , elpizo=to hope, earlier hope

  •  deposit (arrabon) (of Hebrew origin) – a pledge, a partial payment
  •  redemption -(apolutrosi) a releasing effected by payment of ransom
  •  inheritance (kleronomia) inheritance (from choosing lots)
  •  possession (peripoiesi) a lay-away

  • 15For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.


  • faith - the expression of the believer's trust in God


  • love - the evidence of a proper relationship with other people

  • 17I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.


  • spirit (pneuma) - the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides
  • know (epignosis) – exact, complete, experiential knowledge (as opposed to eidenai - to perceive through the senses)
  • revelation (apokaluyi)- laying bear, a disclosure of truth, instruction concerning things before unknown

  •  To know God personally is salvation (John 17:3)


  •  To know Him increasingly is sanctification (Phil 3:10)

  • 18I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and his incomparably great power for us who believe


  •  eyes (ofqalmo) the eye, metaph. the eyes of the mind, the faculty of knowing
  •  know (eidenai) - to perceive through the senses, behold
  •  power (dunamis) inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature

  • 19 …That power is like the working of his mighty strength, 20which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.


  •  fills everything (pleroo) – fills fully so nothing is wanting
  •  church (ekklesia)- an assembly of citizens called out from their homes

"Paul wants the Christian to..."

  • Paul wants the Christian to Know:
  • God experientially
  • The hope of salvation through election.
  • That we are “laid away” for a future with God.
  • The great power of God that impacts the believer.


  •  Said another way:
  • Our election looks back to the beginning and
  • Our inheritance looks forward to the end times
  •   That said, God’s power can surely handle the present !
